Several people I’ve talked with lately don’t realize the influence the Open Source Software movement has in our daily lives.  Some of those people also claim that Open Source Software is written by a bunch of “hackers” that don’t write production-quality software.  That is usually not the case.  In fact, most software that comes with source code has been reviewed and improved upon by others.

This is a partial list of commercial products and services that would not exist without Open Source Software.  This list is not limited to just technology, but products we use on a daily basis.  If you know of something I’ve left out, please comment, and I will do my best to update the list.

Here is the list of products/services that use or contain Open Source Software, along with articles/links to support their entry on the list:

  1. Apple’s iPhone, iPad, iPod, & Mac OS X
  2. Android phones and tablets
  3. Facebook
  4. Twitter
  5. eBay
  6. PayPal
  7. Google
  8. Netflix
  9. Amazon Kindle
  10. Amazon.com (especially their cloud computing services called Amazon Web Services)
  11. VMWare
  12. LinkedIn

Just think of how much each of these companies and products have changed our daily lives. Then, ask yourself if you could imagine what life would be like without them.
